Makena Guest House, established in November 2020 is located right in the centre of the small
farming town of Amersfoort Mpumalanga. The town lying at 1664m above sea level in the upper
reaches of the Vaal River basin on the banks of the Schulspruit River, is surrounded by vast open
spaces that are predominantly used for sheep, cattle and maize farming. Amersfoort was established
in 1876 when two Dutch farmers donated land for the establishment of a new Dutch Reformed
Parish. Reverend Frans Lion Cachet named the parish after the farmer’s hometown of Amersfoort in
central Holland. The town was proclaimed in 1888. The Paul Kruger Bridge over the Vaal River was
built in 1996 and was proclaimed a national monument.

Makena Guest house is the perfect place to stay as you explore and enjoy this region of
Mpumalanga that is characterised by koppies that line the horizon, glistening lakes, vast dams, rivers
and streams. Four of South Africa’s major rivers- the Tugela, the Vaal, the Oliphants and the Pongola
have their sources in the grasslands of this region. The aquatic and grassland birdlife, draws
birdwatchers from around the world. Other popular activities are boating. Fishing. Water- skiing,
quad biking, 4×4 drive trails, horse trails and hiking.
